Trophies
Every year, a number of trophies are awarded for performance during the Congress. We are most grateful to the people who have donated the trophies. Each trophy is held by the winner until the next Torbay Congress.
Basil Wallis Cup
The Basil Wallis Cup, also known as the Individual Championship Trophy, is awarded to the highest-placed player in the Open Tournament who represents a club that plays in the Torbay Chess League.
The Individual Championship Trophy was donated by Basil Wallis 1957.
In 2023, the trophy was awarded to Alan Brusey, Newton Abbot.
The Challenge Cup
The Challenge Cup is awarded to the highest-placed player in the Major Tournament who represents a club that plays in the Torbay Chess League.
The Challenge Cup Trophy was donated by Bill Ingham in 1981. Bill has kindly provided us with a brief bio of his chess career here.
In 2023 the trophy was awarded to Trefor Thynne, Newton Abbot.
The Intermediate Cup
The Intermediate Cup is awarded to the highest-placed player in the Intermediate Tournament who represents a club that plays in the Torbay Chess League.
In 2023 the trophy was awarded to Jack Wills, Newton Abbot.
The Candidates Cup
The Candidates Cup is awarded to the highest-placed player in the Foundation Tournament (previously termed the Minor Tournament) who represents a club that plays in the Torbay Chess League.
The Candidates Trophy was donated by JE Jones in 1965.
In 2023 the trophy was awarded to Joe Forty, Torquay Grammar School.
The Ralph Newman Cup
The Ralph Newman Cup is awarded to the Devon player with the best score in the graded tournaments (i.e. excluding the Open Tournament).
In 2023 the trophy was awarded to Charles Doidge, Teignmouth.
The JH Whitfield Celebration Cup
The JH Whitfield Celebration Cup is awarded to the young player from a Devon club who scores the highest score in any of the tournaments.
In 2023 the trophy was awarded to David Edwards, Barnstaple.
